Swimming ability

  • All senior Falcon members must be able to swim 100 metres in light clothing.

Lifejackets

  • All coxes must wear buoyancy aids. The buoyancy aids are on the sculling blade racks at the back of the boathouse, by the changing rooms.

First aid

  • The first aid box is at the back of the boathouse, between the changing room doors.

Throwlines

The throwlines are located:

  • on the tea trolley
  • on the back of the club doors
  • by the light switches

River protocol

  • Stay on the right-hand side of the river (i.e facing the direction you’re travelling in, the bank should be on the right). This is the opposite to road rules!
  • If a boat is approaching you on a possible collision course, shout ‘Take a look’, and the boat should then steer away from you. If in doubt, always shout.
  • When spinning the boat, always allow plenty of time and space. If there is a queue, wait your turn – do not spin in front of other boats. Do not sit in the spinning area – move further on for coaching.
  • You are only allowed to spin the boat in 4 places:
    • below Folly Bridge
    • Longbridges (the boathouse by the two bridges by the Gut)
    • below Donnington Bridge
    • at Iffley Lock

Possible danger areas

  • The Gut: This is a narrow section with a blind corner. Do not overtake or warm up through here.
  • Stay close to the bank.
  • Be aware of crews that may be spinning at the Longbridges end of the Gut.
  • Towpath re-construction ongoing - beware of debris under the water - especially rocks placed at the base of the path.

Spinning at Longbridges

  • Only do this if the way is clear. Beware of strong weir streams which can push you under the bridges.

Spinning at Iffley

  • In normal stream, spin at the pub.
  • In strong stream, spin at Haystacks Corner (the red and white post, opposite the Isis boathouse).

Punts and Pleasure Craft

  • Punts and pleasure craft (especially electric ones) are particularly numerous on summer evenings and weekends around Folly Bridge and the Cherwell branches. They are not obliged to follow the rules of the river – do not abuse them if they get in your way. Be polite and steer around them. Always keep a good lookout as they tend to be very unpredictable!
