We work with local OX4 schools to provide rowing and sculling programmes for under-18s. All juniors come to Falcon via their schools. We offer both summer schools and term-time programmes.
The programmes are run by our professional Community Sports Coach, Paul Redgewell.
FAQs for parents/carers
Where are the sessions held?
- At Falcon Rowing and Canoeing Club, off Meadow Lane, close to Donnington Bridge. For a map of the area where we row, click here (opens new window).
What do they involve?
- ‘Dry’ sessions take place on land and usually involve practising technique on the ergo machines (rowing machines).
- ‘Wet’ sessions take place on the water in the boat, with a coach on the bank.
Who runs the sessions?
- A qualified coach, possibly with a second coach or coach helper.
What are the safety procedures?
- We follow the Water Safety Code guidelines laid down by our national governing body, the Amateur Rowing Association (ARA). See [insert link to ARA website] for more information.
- All participants must complete a 50-metre swim test in light clothing and capsize drill before they can go on the water without buoyancy aids. The capsize drill takes place in a local pool and will show your child what to do if he/she falls out of the boat on the river.
- All junior coaches must be fully qualified and have completed Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks. Our child protection officer is Lorrie Lawton.
- You need to inform the coaches of any medical conditions your child may have, and give permission for first aid to be given in case of an emergency.
How much will it cost?
Are there any other extra costs?
- Amateur Rowing Association membership.
In order to race, you have to be a member of the ARA. This costs £19 per year for juniors. See [ insert link to ARA junior membership section] for more details.
- If participants race at official regattas, the cost is £6-8 per race. We usually ask for a small additional contribution for petrol for trailering the boats to the regatta (£2-4). We expect to attend 6-8 regattas per year with the juniors.
Club kit
- All Falcon members must race in club kit. A range of club kit is available, but we recommend an all-in-one rowing suit as this is the most cost-effective – they cost about £35 and last for a long time. See [insert link to kit page] for more details.
What should my child bring?
- Trainers and socks
- Shorts/leggings
- T-shirt
- Warm outer top layer to wear on the water
- Water bottle
- Sun cream
- Hat or cap
- Warm clothes to change into after the session,
Please don’t bring valuables such as phones or money to the club.
How can I get involved?
- We welcome all parental/carer involvement. The way is open to train as a coach/coach helper, or simply to help out with supervision, regattas, barbecues…
